In Top Up Fortunes, landing a volcano/trident symbol in a reel will expand the height of that reel for the next three spins. The reels begin at three symbols tall and can reach a maximum height of six symbols tall. After three spins, the reel will drop back down one level (the green squares in the top left of the reel indicate how many spins remain at that height).
Having taller reels offers several advantages—better line hits, more chances to trigger the free games bonus and more chances to land the six scatter symbols needed to trigger the hold & spin feature. Additionally, landing another volcano/trident symbol on a max height reel will trigger the Add Wild feature, which adds random wilds to the reels.

Like other Sega Sammy games, the free games bonus and hold & spin feature are both feast-or-famine.
It’s possible for more than one volcano/trident symbol to land on the same reel. Each symbol landed will raise the reel one level.
The denomination buttons don’t work on the bet pad, so you have to touch the main screen to switch denoms. I imagine this is a bug that might get fixed later.

The trident symbol landed in reel three, which expanded that reel to the max height (six symbols tall). You can tell there are three spins remaining because of the three green squares in the top left of the reel.
Landing six of the scatter symbols with credit prizes will trigger the hold & spin feature. The reel heights from the base game transfer into the feature, and the reels can expand further during the feature. The largest prizes are at the top, so the feature can pay very well when the reels get tall.
